Shaolin Temple

Luoyang, Henan

A Buddhist monastery in the Song Mountains near Dengfeng, widely regarded as the birthplace of Shaolin kung fu and a key site in the history of Chan (Zen) Buddhism in China. Reachable as a day trip from both Luoyang and Zhengzhou.

Why visit Shaolin Temple?

Shaolin's reputation rests on two overlapping histories: it's traditionally credited as the place where the Indian monk Bodhidharma transmitted Chan Buddhism into China, and separately, monks at the temple developed the martial arts tradition that gave Shaolin kung fu its name and global recognition. Few sites combine a foundational role in a major Buddhist school with this level of international martial arts fame, which is part of why it draws both religious visitors and martial arts enthusiasts for very different reasons.

How to experience it

The complex includes the temple itself, the nearby Pagoda Forest (a dense cluster of stone memorial stupas for deceased monks), and martial arts performance halls where students demonstrate Shaolin kung fu routines for visitors. It's a large site spread across the mountainside, so it's typically treated as a full-day excursion rather than a brief stop, especially if combined with the surrounding mountain scenery.

Tip

The kung fu demonstration shows run at set times during the day — worth checking the schedule on arrival so it doesn't end up missed while exploring the rest of the grounds.
