Mount Putuo

Zhoushan, Zhejiang

One of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains, occupying its own island and dedicated to Guanyin, the bodhisattva of compassion. Home to several major monasteries and a large coastal statue of Guanyin facing out to sea.

¿Por qué visitar Mount Putuo?

Unlike the other three sacred mountains, which are inland peaks, Putuo is an entire island treated as sacred ground, which gives it a different character — the sea is as much a part of the religious landscape here as the temples themselves. It's one of the most active pilgrimage destinations in Chinese Buddhism specifically associated with Guanyin, drawing pilgrims and visitors from across China and overseas Chinese Buddhist communities rather than functioning mainly as a historical site.

Cómo disfrutarlo

The island is reached by ferry, and the main sites — including several major temple complexes and the large coastal Guanyin statue — are spread across the island rather than concentrated in one place, so most visitors plan at least a full day, often staying overnight. Early morning is considered a particularly good time at the temples, both for quieter grounds and because chanting and rituals are often part of the morning routine.

Consejo

Ferry schedules to and from the island can be affected by weather, especially in typhoon season (summer into early autumn) — worth building in some flexibility around travel dates if visiting during that period.
