West Lake

杭州, 浙江

A UNESCO World Heritage lake bordered by gardens, temples, and causeways, shaped by over a thousand years of landscaping and referenced constantly in Chinese poetry and painting.

为什么要去West Lake?

West Lake's UNESCO listing specifically recognizes it as a cultural landscape rather than a purely natural one — the lake's current form, causeways, and surrounding gardens were deliberately shaped by successive generations starting over a thousand years ago, making it as much a work of landscape design as a body of water. It has been a recurring subject in Chinese poetry and painting since at least the Tang Dynasty, so much of what's considered classically 'beautiful' in Chinese landscape aesthetics is partly defined by this specific place.

怎么体验

The lake is large enough that most visitors pick a section to focus on rather than circling the whole perimeter — walking or cycling one of the causeways, taking a boat across to one of the small islands, or focusing on a single garden along the shore. The view and atmosphere change significantly by time of day, with early morning generally quieter and considered most atmospheric, especially in mist.

小贴士

Renting a bike to cover one causeway and a section of shoreline is usually more practical than trying to walk the entire perimeter, which is a longer distance than it looks on a map.
