Dafen grew in the 1980s and 90s into one of the world's largest hubs for hand-painted reproduction art, with workshops producing copies of Western masterpieces at scale for export — a specific and unusual chapter of Shenzhen's manufacturing-driven growth applied to art rather than electronics. In recent years the village has also pushed toward original work and higher-end art alongside the reproduction trade, reflecting the same shift toward higher-value production seen elsewhere in the city's economy.

The streets are lined with open workshops where painting happens visibly rather than behind closed doors, so much of the experience is simply walking through and watching artists at work rather than visiting a formal gallery. It's possible to commission a custom piece or reproduction directly from a workshop, which is a different experience from browsing a gallery of finished, fixed-price work.
