Muslim Quarter
西安, 陕西
A historic neighborhood centered around the Great Mosque, home to Xi'an's Hui Muslim community for over a thousand years and now a dense street-food market by day and evening.
为什么要去Muslim Quarter?
The Hui are one of China's officially recognized ethnic minorities, descended in part from Silk Road traders who settled in Xi'an centuries ago, and the quarter is one of the clearest places in China to see that history reflected in daily life — architecture, food, and the Great Mosque itself blend Chinese and Islamic design traditions rather than looking like a mosque transplanted from elsewhere. It functions as a living neighborhood, not a reconstructed heritage district.
怎么体验
The main street is dense with food stalls selling skewers, sweets, and the city's signature noodle and bread dishes, and the typical way to experience it is grazing through multiple vendors rather than choosing one sit-down meal. The Great Mosque itself sits just off the main commercial street and is comparatively quiet, so pairing a visit there with the food street gives a noticeably different pace within the same neighborhood.
小贴士
Go hungry and share — the appeal is trying small amounts from several stalls, not filling up at the first one you see.
