Victoria Peak
Hong Kong, Hong Kong SAR
The highest point on Hong Kong Island, reached by a historic funicular tram, offering panoramic views over the skyscraper-dense harbor and skyline below.
Why visit Victoria Peak?
The Peak Tram, opened in 1888, was originally built to connect the wealthier residential area on the upper slopes with the commercial harbor below, and it remains one of the oldest funicular railways still in operation in Asia — the journey itself is part of the historical experience, not just transport to a viewpoint. The view from the top captures Hong Kong's defining feature: an extremely dense skyline compressed between steep hills and the harbor, which is hard to fully appreciate from street level.
How to experience it
The summit has a mix of viewing terraces, walking trails, and shopping/dining areas, so it can be treated as a quick viewpoint stop or a longer outing depending on how much time you give it. The classic tram ride up gets busy, especially around sunset when the most popular viewing window for both daylight and night skyline shots overlaps with peak demand.
Tip
Going up well before sunset and staying through to see the skyline lights come on gives you both the daytime view and the night skyline in a single visit, without needing to queue for the tram twice.
