Xi'an City Wall
Xi'an, Shaanxi
A largely intact Ming Dynasty fortification encircling the old city, wide enough to walk or cycle along its full loop. One of the best-preserved ancient city walls in China.
¿Por qué visitar Xi'an City Wall?
Most Chinese cities lost their historic walls during 20th-century modernization, which is part of why Xi'an's wall stands out — it's one of the few that survived close to fully intact rather than as isolated fragments or gatehouses. The current wall dates to the early Ming Dynasty and was built on top of earlier Tang-era foundations, reflecting Xi'an's much longer history as an imperial capital under multiple dynasties.
Cómo disfrutarlo
The top of the wall is wide and flat, built originally for troop movement, which is why cycling the full loop is a common way to see it rather than just walking a short section. The full circuit is a significant distance, so most visitors either commit to cycling the whole loop or pick one gate to walk a shorter stretch and turn back rather than attempting the entire perimeter on foot.
Consejo
Renting a bike at one of the main gates and riding a section (rather than the full loop) is usually more enjoyable than trying to walk a long stretch in the heat.
