Mount Emei

Chengdu, Sichuan

One of China's Four Sacred Buddhist Mountains, with temples scattered along forested slopes leading up to a Golden Summit known for dramatic sunrise views and a sea-of-clouds effect. A common day-or-overnight trip from Chengdu.

Pourquoi visiter Mount Emei ?

Emei is one of four mountains traditionally recognized as sacred sites in Chinese Buddhism, each associated with a different bodhisattva, and Buddhist practice on the mountain dates back roughly 1,700 years, making it one of the oldest continuously active Buddhist sites in the country. It's jointly inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Leshan Giant Buddha, reflecting how the two sites are treated as a connected cultural and religious landscape rather than separate, unrelated attractions.

Comment en profiter

The mountain is large enough that most visitors combine walking with a cable car for at least part of the ascent, since reaching the Golden Summit on foot alone is a serious multi-hour hike best suited to experienced hikers with an early start. Many visitors stay overnight at a guesthouse partway up or near the summit specifically to catch sunrise, which is considered the most rewarding time to be at the top.

Astuce

Wild macaques live along some of the lower trails and are used to visitors carrying food — keep snacks out of sight and don't hand-feed them, since they can be more assertive than expected.
