Lingyin Temple is one of the oldest and most significant Buddhist temples in southern China, and its hillside setting — approached through a forested gorge dotted with Buddhist rock carvings — gives it a different character from temples built within dense city centers. It remains an active temple with resident monks and ongoing worship rather than functioning solely as a historical site.

The approach to the main temple buildings passes through Feilai Peak, a hillside carved with hundreds of Buddhist statues and reliefs dating back centuries, which is often as much a highlight as the temple halls themselves. The complex is spread out and involves a fair amount of walking and some stairs, so it's worth budgeting more time than a typical single-building temple visit.

Don't rush past the carved rock reliefs on the approach path to reach the main halls — many visitors treat them as a side note when they're one of the most distinctive parts of the site.
