Big Wild Goose Pagoda

Xi'an, Shaanxi

A Tang Dynasty Buddhist pagoda built to house scriptures brought back from India by the monk Xuanzang, whose travels later inspired the novel Journey to the West.

Pourquoi visiter Big Wild Goose Pagoda ?

Xuanzang's 7th-century overland journey to India and back to translate Buddhist texts is one of the most consequential real journeys in Chinese religious history, and the pagoda was purpose-built to store what he brought back — it's a direct physical link to that specific historical event rather than a generic temple structure. Its survival largely intact since the Tang Dynasty also makes it a useful reference point for understanding pre-modern Chinese pagoda architecture.

Comment en profiter

The pagoda itself can be climbed for a view over the surrounding plaza, and the wider grounds include gardens and a large public square that's especially active in the evening with fountain shows and crowds rather than being a quiet temple visit only. It's common to treat this as an evening stop rather than a quiet daytime temple visit, given how much of the surrounding activity happens after dark.

Astuce

The large fountain and light show in the square outside runs in the evening — worth timing your visit around if you want both the historic site and that public spectacle.
